Principal Duties, Responsibilities and Accountabilities
The Head of Design and deputy are responsible, under the direct authority of the Accountable Manager as delegated by the
AEB, for:-
* Establishing a documented design assurance system
* Ensuring design work is undertaken in accordance with the design assurance system, A8-21 and other relevant
regulations.
* Ensuring that for design work, compliance is demonstrated and verified with the appropriate type certification basis or
equivalent.
* Signing a Declaration of Compliance after satisfactory verification of compliance with applicable airworthiness
requirements
* Confirming design procedures as specified in the exposition have been followed by signing a Declaration of Compliance
for type certification, design change or repair design.
* Signing Certificates of Design, in accordance with Def Stan 05-123, for Aircraft Modifications and repairs performed
under RUKs UK MoD DAOS approval.
* Technical definition of aircraft changes and repairs.
* The control of Flight under "B" Conditions in association with the Air Navigation Order and terms of Approval
* The control of Military Flight under DAOS/AvP 67 in association with the terms of the Approvals
* The appointment of Compliance Verification Engineers
Functional Responsibilities
* Liaise with relevant Site Heads of Engineering to ensure:
* Professional development of Aircraft design engineers within the Business Area (including support to appraisals and
goal flow-down).
* Adherence to, and development of, best practice process.
* Availability of appropriate aircraft design tools.
* Aircraft design excellence based on a strong process culture and skills development.
* Interface with other members of the Engineering and Quality Management Team to establish Engineering as a highly
professional and respected part of RUK.
Candidate Specification
Qualification
1. Degree Qualified in a relevant subject, eg. Aeronautics, Engineering, Physics, or Mathematics. However, formal
qualifications are not as important as current, relevant experience.
2. Membership of a Professional body is desirable but not essential.
Experience
1. An aircraft engineering industry background is essential, coupled with an adequate degree of commercial awareness. The
candidate will need adequate breadth and depth of complex electronic systems, military or commercial, technical and
management experience.
2. The appointee will have a proven track record in managing large (>30 people), multi-disciplined engineering teams
through a significant portion of the engineering lifecycle (determination of requirements, function analysis,
architecture design and evaluation, design, integration, trials, acceptance, in service support).
3. A successful track record in the management of subcontractors, management of software subcontracts would be an
advantage.
4. Demonstrated the ability to lead and motivate a team to meet demanding technical milestones within tight timescales
and costs.

and costs (NRE and UPC).
6. Experience in re-engineering a company's processes and culture would be an advantage, but is not essential.
Personal Characteristics
1. This is an important position that will make stringent demands on the personal attributes of the appointee. It is a
position of high visibility where proven organisational skills combined with sound technical and astute commercial
judgement is required. In addition, good inter personal skills, good communication skills, style, charisma, flexible, and
motivational leadership are also required.
2. The candidate will be mentally robust and have the strength of character to take the action that his/her mind
persuades them is correct.
3. A naturally enthusiastic, competitive, self starter, optimistic and persuasive individual with a high level of
personal drive, integrity, energy, patience and resilience coupled with sound judgement, common sense and a sense of
humour, but hates not achieving personal objectives within planned timescales, quality and cost constraints.
4. He/she must be comfortable and empathetic with foreign cultures and have a political awareness that facilitates
diplomatic but firm handling of sensitive customer issues at all levels.
5. Administratively, must recognise the need for regular, concise and objective management information reporting the
status of the engineering.
